Aladdin (2019)

I think Will Smith is what made this movie pretty good. He made his genie character everything that you didn’t know you wanted out of a genie: funny, boastful, and all-in-all pretty friendly. Some of the musical sequences were some of the most epic I’ve ever seen, like when the genie first introduced himself, and when King Ali entered the Kingdom. I really liked how especially in the beginning, each scene kept switching from really bright to really dark which showed which highlighted which characters were the protagonist, and who was the antagonist. The music changed to reflect these scenes too. Compared to other fantasy type movies, I think this was pretty good considering how well the genie was played, and considering the the overall plot was a pretty good one.

Spirited Away

Story Space: The story space is the spirit world that Chihiro ends up in. The amusement park she is at is a sort of real-world reflection of that spirit world. Also, the river that Chihiro falls in when she was a kid is shown in flashbacks and is apart of the story space.

Plot Space: One of these places is the house that the family is supposed to be moving into. This house that they were trying to get to ends up being the reason why they got stuck at the amusement park since her dad tried to take a shortcut through there.

Screen Space: The screen space is just the world as Chihiro sees it, full of different spirits and a very colorful world.

Un Chien Andalou

Un Chien Andalou was very visual and did not have much dialogue, if at all.The beginning shows barber slicing a woman’s eye open. Then there’s a nurse in the middle of the street and you can’t tell if it is a man or woman. Then a man comes in the apartment while dragging the two pianos and the deer carcass. He then assaults the woman. And then ants start coming out of his hands, Lastly, the man and woman are on a beach and then it ends with their heads bodies being buried in the sand with their heads sticking out.

The Searchers

I expected this movie to be about a cowboy hero saving a woman from some Native Americans, and that is exactly what it was. I didn’t think I would like Westerns at all, but I have to admit that it wasn’t too bad. The acting was pretty good and it was pretty funny at times. The story itself was pretty interesting too. This film exemplifies the Western genre because of its classic desert setting, the many horses, and the many fights that take place.

Psycho

Psycho displayed the horror genre using the suspenseful music, and the shocking murder scenes. I thought that the murder of Marion was especially shocking because she was just showering and then all of a sudden she’s stabbed like 30 times. The director made sure this scene was shot from many different angles as she was being murdered which added to the shock. Some of the major themes of this film are the specific music selections that happen right before a character is killed, a psychopathic murderer, and almost like a haunted house type of theme considering that the murderer’s mother was supposed to be dead but people kept seeing her in the house.

Gravity

Film plot vs. Story?

The plot is a space mission goes wrong and leaving its survivor alone to figure out how to survive and get back home. The story focuses on her mental battles and hardships along the way.

How does it imply cause and effect?

One example of cause and effect is when she is brave enough to make it back home because she had hallucinated that she had seen her former mission director Matt who told her to be brave and to keep pushing forward.

How does it use time and space?

This movie uses time by having several situations where there are time limits for Ryan to complete something in order to survive which makes it tense for both her and the audience. Space is used just by the fact that the setting is outer space and it just makes the struggles of one human seem so small and insignificant.

Is its range of story information restricted or unrestricted? Why?

The range of information is restricted because that way, the audience only focuses on the tenseness of the current situation.

Is the depth of story information objective or subjective? Why?

The depth of sort information is subjective because the story revolves around one character and her mental and physical journey.

The Incredibles 2

One of the reasons why The Incredibles is one of my favorite movies is because instead of it just being a superhero movie, they focus on what it would be like to have to assimilate to the real world while having to love with superpowers. They did a great job showing this in this movie with their focus on the kids’ lives when things such as Dash struggling in math, Violet’s dating life, and Jack Jack’s uncontrollable powers affecting how the family takes care of him. I also really like the animation of the movie because the colors seemed even more vibrant and the world more detailed than the previous movie. I would put this movie at the top of the superhero genre because it’s not just about one person saving the world, but about a family assimilating to society with their power’s but also feel the responsibility to protect the innocent from danger when no one else can.

Jurrasic Park Meaning

Referential Meaning: Two paleontologists and a mathematician are invited to tour a dinosaur theme park on an island. These dinosaurs were created using prehistoric DNA. The founder of this island believes that everyone will be safe, but quickly things go haywire and lives are put in danger.

Explicit Meaning: Alan makes it very clear to his partner that he has no interest in having kids. Much to his dismay, they are accompanied by two kids while at Jurassic Park. While at first he tries to avoid them, he’s eventually forced to protect them from the dangers of the park. They slowly begin to grow a bond, and by the end of the movie he realizes that kids may not be so bad after all.

Implicit Meaning: The main character must learn how to relate to children and is forced to do so once he realizes he must protect them from the dinosaurs.

Symptomatic Meaning: What’s more important in life is the relationships with the people that you love. Not obsessing over less important things. Neglecting to focus on those relationships can cause them serious strain and possibly get people hurt.

Wall-E Film Form

C: Credits- Credits are rolled over a pan of outer space with music playing over it that suggests that people are now living somewhere out there. The camera eventually zooms in on Wall-E and a completely trashed planet Earth.

A – Earth: Introduced to the abandon and littered planet Earth. We see that Wall-E’s job is to collect and compact all of the trash on the planet. Also see that he likes to collect and preserve interesting objects.

B – Eva: Eve arrives on Earth and we see that her job is to look for signs of life. Wall-E develops a crush on her but then she shuts down when she accomplishes her mission.

A – The Axiom: Introduced to the Axiom in the same way we were introduces to Earth. We learn about the captain’s mission how it has gone wrong.

C – Lost plant: Learn that the autopilot is the antagonist and wants to get rid of the plant so that they do not return to Earth. Eva and Wall-E are labeled as rogue robots and try to avoid being caught by the other robots in the ship.

B – Finding the Plant: The plant is finally recovered so Eva’s mission is complete again. However, Eva, Wall-E, and the captain have to work together to keep it from the autopilot.

A – Return to Earth: The Axiom returns to Earth with the plant. WALL-E is fixed with parts from his collection of items and falls in love with Eva again. The humans begin to restore Earth back to the way it was.

My First Blog: The Office

My favorite show of all time is The Office. It’s absolutely hilarious, but also has very real story lines that make you feel for each character. The show is filmed as a “documentary.” They use a single camera for the entirety of the show which makes the audience feel like they are a part of the scenes, instead of watching in a TV screen. Especially because the characters on the show acknowledge the camera often with subtle gestures and looks after funny/awkward things happen, like so. The way they edit the episodes is presumably by filming quick interviews before or after certain scenes with specific characters and editing them in so that they interrupt the scenes themselves. One of my favorite examples of that is the fire drill scene which is linked here. The Office is the epitome of TV comedy, and the inspiration behind several similarly styled shows like Modern Family and Parks and Recreation.
